A Heroic Point

If you woke up and discovered you had secret powers which would make your boss’s life a misery and your children suddenly easy to get along with, would you embrace them or get rid of them? (The powers, not the children; this blog does not endorse that).

As with all super-hero types who really don’t know how good they’ve got it, Heroes sees seemingly every-day people blessed with super wow-wow powers suddenly deciding that no, they don’t really want to be able to live this privileged life, they actually want to suffer along with the rest of us mere mortals. How very bold and community spirited of them! So now I’m sitting here trying to think of what powers I would and wouldn’t keep—assuming, that is, that I’d been blessed with more than just a couple.

One I definitely would keep would be invisibility—obviously. Ever since I saw Predator and was old enough to know that staring madly at a certain part of a girl’s anatomy in public was considered somehow wrong I’ve wanted to be able to vanish at will. One I wouldn’t keep would be the power to fly. I’ve also always wanted to fly—ever since I saw The Flight Of The Navigator—but I’m a bit concerned that in time it might get boring, not to mention I’d probably be taken in by the government in a matter of minutes of getting airborne, and that might mean them discovering my invisibility super power, which would be more than a bit of a bummer after such unencumbered greatness.

Who knows what will become of the Heroes? I just hope they start to think themselves lucky soon, or that if they don’t someone might snatch their powers away and send a few in my direction.
