It has been some time since the last episode of the great Heroes series was aired, and it is one of those shows that has left its lasing impact on my life as well as many others I am sure. It seems to pop into my head from time to time, when I hear someone say something familiar or related to the program, or when I see one of the actors in a new program or film, and I always just have that lingering feeling that it could have been so much more. This may be my ego believing that I could have written a better ending to the series, or that I would have done it a little differently, but I just cannot help but feel a slightly bitter feeling about the third and fourth season.

The first season was absolutely spellbinding, as was the second, but for me, the moment when it went from cosmestore to pound store, was when they introduced the fair ground characters and the woman who could not hear. This whole story line was drab, predictable and really ruined what was a superbly written and acted series. The actors are not to blame, it is the fault of the producers and writers for trying to drag it out a season too far, and consequently weakening the story to the point where many people could predict what was likely to happen in most cases, and had also lost interest to some degree. There is a fine line between continuing a story on for an extra season to enhance it, or doing it to make more money, and to prolong the experience.

The only drama that has managed to create such a high level of drama, tension and excitement for a sustained number of seasons was Lost. For me, Heroes was right up there as one of the greatest alongside Lost for the first two or three seasons, but with the invention of the carnival crowd my interest began to subside. Writers should try to remain strong to the story above all other things. Pressure to create an extra season only meant that the strong story line had to be dragged out and diluted down to fill up air time. Having said all of that I would like to reinforce the fact that I was, and still am a huge fan of the show, and it is still one of the best TV shows ever created.

I was reading gossip websites at work the other day (well, what else is there to do on a Friday afternoon when all our clients have already left for the day and the payroll software is doing it end-of-week calculations?) and I came across a snippet of news that is going to delight all the males fans of Heroes out there; Hayden Panettiere, the sexy jail-bait teenager from the show, has been cast in a new ABC soap opera about country singers. Hmm. Not convinced by the subject matter- and I don’t even know if she can sing – but I’m sure the guys out there won’t care as long as she wears a fair few skimpy outfits, right?

So far there are only plans to film the pilot, which is par for the course in the States where shows get a very short time to impress audiences and studio bosses. The basic plot of “Nashville” follows two country stars; up and coming Juliette Barnes, played by Hayden, and established forty-something Rayna, who is set to be portrayed by another US TV stalwart Connie Britton from Friday Night Lights. It sounds like its going to be all backstabbing and claws-out bitching – I’m thinking a less camp Ugly Betty, but set in the country music industry rather than the fashion world.

I’m sure Hayden is going to be fabulous, but there are some initial publicity shots that show the actress looking very like real-life country music star Taylor Swift – which I’m finding more than a little distracting. I guess if Hayden’s UK fans want the chance to see Nashville on their screens they’ll either have to search online or hope it impresses the executives and gets picked up for a full season. If that happens, it’s bound to find its way across the Atlantic, like most US television shows before it!

I always have this weird thing with any TV show that I love that I find myself strangely drawn to the villains, rather than the heroes. And Heroes was no exception. Yes, the good guys were all fascinating and complex, but it was Sylar who really captured my attention – and my heart… He was just simply the best. Zachary Quinto, who played Sylar, is now more famous to movie lovers as Spock, after he starred in the sensational Star Trek prequel a few years ago. I have to admit, I was never a huge fan of the original series (I was more of a TNG girl) but knowing that Zachary was in the film, well, I had to go along and check out what kind of a Spock he made.

And the answer was a very good one. It must be difficult for an actor to play a part where he is not allowed to show any emotion. In fact, he spent most of the movie looking like his face had been injected with all the Botox Sussex could get together! And yet, he still managed to pull off an almost show-stealing performance. Simon Pegg’s brilliant comic turn as Scottie beat him to the punch for that accolade – but only just!

2012 will see the second prequel released, with Zachary reprising his role as Spock alongside Chris Pine as James T Kirk and the amazingly talented Anton Yelchin as Chekov. In fact, all the old faces from the first prequel are back and, even better, JJ Abrams is staying firmly in the director’s chair. Better known for creating the bewildering series “Lost” Abrams was a big fan of the original Star Trek, and you can see just how much he loved the programme in the way his first film was made.

Sci-fi is a genre that often puts people off when it comes to film, but if you are a fan then you should be excited about the goodies that are fast approaching. There has been a re-emergence of science fiction in recent years after what has seemed like a considerable lull in its quality, and this has encouraged the film industry to remake several 80s classics. So if you’re not a fan of sci-fi already perhaps you soon will be!

The 80s was definitely the decade that embraced science fiction to the full. Back then there were films such as the Star Wars trilogy, Blade Runner, The Terminator, RoboCop, Back to the Future and Total recall. These were other worldly, full of special effects and often included some kind of ’deep'moral question, something that science fiction is supposed to excel at. I will admit that not all of these films were great and to claim that Arnold Schwarzenegger movies have a deep moral question is a bit of a push, but on the whole 80s science fiction was big budget, crowd pleasing and thought provoking (Even if they did think that computers would be the size of planets by 2012).

In recent years however science fiction has had a bit of a hard time, with the exceptions of Avatar, Inception, Transformers and The Matrix there have been few quality block busters. Films have even sought to call themselves something other than science fiction; ’It’s a conspiracy thriller set 50 years from now’. You can imagine the joy of sci-fi fans everywhere then when it was released that three massive 80s films will be remade; Total recall with Colin Farrell playing Doug Quaid, RoboCop and Ridley Scott is making a sequel to Blade Runner. These three films are true science fiction tails and it shows that the genre is alive again. All Sci-fi writers who had given up hope dust off those bespoke three piece suits and prepare for the Oscars!

Heroes is probably one of those shows that will go down in history as starting strong and then going out with a whimper. By the time the fourth and final season aired in 2010, viewers were becoming increasingly confused and frustrated with the multiple storylines, character arcs and general doom and gloom that pervaded the series. The first season was plotted elegantly with each character truly fleshed out to the point that they felt like everyday people.

The show did feel a lot like an internet marketing advert on many occasions. There were so many characters to keep track of and new storylines being laid on top of one another that you have expected a ‘click here to find out more'button appear on your screen. As the show was designed to mimic traditional convoluted comic book territory, viewers shouldn’t have been so surprised that the stories became every more complicated and confusing.

The first season had balanced everything so perfectly that perhaps it shouldn’t feel so much of a surprise that the quality dipped so early into the second season. The writers, perhaps over confident with the success of the first season took a few too many chances and ended up alienating many viewers halfway through the second. Whilst characters like Hiro and Claire proved to be consistently watchable, others like Sylar – who was brilliant in the first season – began to get a little over exposed. This was a mistake as the joy of Heroes was in the general feeling of the unknown. We didn’t want to know too much about Sylar because his true menace remained in not knowing exactly what his motives were – aside from stealing everyone’s powers.

Staggering into the darkness

By the time the show entered its third season, a lot of damage had been done causing viewers to switch off in their droves. It became an endurance test for those that had been left behind. It might very well have been like playing a computer game with instructions to ‘click here to see what Sylar does next'dotted all over the place throughout the season. Many threads that were left hanging from the second season were either truncated badly or completely ignored – why did Sylar suddenly become like Norman Bates? It was a portent of the end for Heroes and already NBC executives were becoming concerned over the steady decline in viewing figures. Like Star Trek Enterprise before it, Heroes would move into its fourth and final season like a bleeding soldier knowing that it’s doomed but still willing to fight for survival

The Fourth and Beyond

And it was the fourth season that suddenly found the show finding its wonderful first season feet again! Hitting the brakes on all the convoluted plot arcs, twists and random characters who would disappear after a few episodes, season four suddenly focused the show again. The only problem with fewer stories was that the writers saw fit to overindulge in them making some of the arcs a little long winded and in one case utterly pointless. Sylar by this point had been explored thoroughly almost making him a redundant character. We knew everything about Hiro but there was still more to learn and he had become much more like he was in the first season – wondrous and not annoying.

Despite the show striding forward confidently during the fourth season, NBC executives made the decision not to renew the series, unfortunately leaving us all with a great cliff hanger that now may never have a resolution.

Considering good and bad is in our daily routine – from interoffice London services we offer to the food we serve, every action, every deed we commit to is a way of expressing positive or negative features of our character. And this is a well established concept in television. Heroes is one of these shows that the younger generation would grow up with. It is a television production that is among the most attractive shows especially for young people and this is one of the main reasons why the series are somehow attached to the everyday life of these youths. Despite being a completely fictional and quite unreal in terms of plot, the show is offering not only sole entertainment. It is a tale of friendship, love, respect and teaches moral values just like older shows were some of the main sources of moral for other generations.

One of the first aspects that we can easily observe in the show is one related to fighting evil – the clash between what’s right and what’s wrong. And even though being obvious to every reasonable man, such a concept incorporated into a completely fictional production is somehow attracting the attention of the viewers. One cannot but recognize such strong moral convictions in the show itself – so we can easily conclude that the series are one of those TV productions that would actually reveal the positive character of human nature and oppose it to the social and public flaws.

The show is also a good source of behavioral concepts within the family and the close circle of people surrounding us. It reveals the complexity and yet the simplicity of family and friend relationships – in terms of exposing qualities to the audience, Heroes is thus easily qualified as a positive show. And it certainly is a much better option for the youths than television production such as ’Jerry Springer Show’. It is not about being a hero with supernatural powers, it is about being a hero by simply being a better man.

Heroes had been on for four seasons and each of the seasons had been attention catching. It had become very enjoyable to a wide cross-section of people. The mere fact that it is a rather decent series is one of the reasons why most individuals were interested in watching it.

One thing that should be noted here is that the series had really dropped in the ratings. Season one was attention catching and highly acceptable and this accounted for its higher than expected rating then. But things went down over the years as successive seasons were released. Season four had not being able to get the falling ratings.

This situation had led to the loss of interest in the series by most people. It became so bad that many did not even know when it was been aired. Many viewers are of the opinion that the series should not be extended for as long as its 42 minutes. The general opinion is that things can be wrapped up more quickly.

Some viewers were of the view that some of the scenes and action are rather senseless. Some tricks did not really apply to reality in the movie. Most people, however, really blamed the demise of the series on the writing. After a good cast line up, where it seemed that the casting director must have use some HR software from www.octopus-hr.co.uk , to come up with the different actors to play the respective roles. The writers it seems did not understand how to write for these characters and where to go with them.

Many of us diehard fans are hoping against hope that they bring back Heroes one day.

Right, Heroes is over and we’ve all dealt with it and moved on, but doesn’t it feel like there’s still something missing from your life? Sitting around discussing soap operas, suit fabrics and pregnancy with my workmates isn’t anywhere near as much fun as sitting around discussing Heroes. My life just isn’t the same without being able to follow a bunch of everyday, ordinary folks who suddenly discover they have super powers…

Well, worry no more, my fellow Heroes fans, as those lovely people at Channel 4 in the UK have produced their own unusual and different take on the super powers theme. “Misfits” is the story of a bunch of, erm, misfits who discover they all have different super powers after being struck by lightning. What makes this series smarter than the average TV sci-fi show is that the powers each person has are a reflection of some aspect of their personality. For example, the group’s flirty girl can make anyone fall in love with her just by touching them; the quiet guy that everyone ignores can turn invisible and so on. There’s even a wisecracking Irish lad who appears to have no super powers at all until the start of series 2 when he suddenly…. Well, I’ll not give away one of the greatest TV plot twists away in blog, will I? I always hated reading other Heroes blogs for just that reason!

As far as I know, there are no plans to show the programme in the US, but I bet it won’t be long before TV bosses decide to make their own version, as they did with that other great British drama “Shameless”. In the meantime, you can check out episodes on YouTube or buy the DVD box set online.

Heroes as we all know is an acclaimed series. Many actresses and actors have found more fame as a result of being part of the Heroes cast. One of the reasons men watch programs is because of the ladies in it and heroes is not an exception. This is a collection of personal and a few people’s thoughts on some of the female characters in Heroes. It is a mixture of opinion on the actresses as individuals and their characters as portrayed in the series. Kristen Bell played Elle Bishop, a company agent who has electric manipulation ability. Elle does not need Red Diesel Portsmouth or any kind of fuel to aid her powers. Kristen Bell as an actress has been voted as one of the women many men will like to see naked. Her character has also been described by a colleague as sexy and second only to one of the characters played by Ali Larter.

Ali Larter played Niki Saunders and Tracy Strauss; the former a woman of many sides with enhanced strength while the latter was a political advisor. Ali Larter was doing well as a fashion model and used to be a part of the popular Ford Agency. She however attained wider fame for her role in the hit Heroes series where she played the complicated part of interpreting two different people. Niki Saunders according to my friend is the sexiest of all the women in Heroes. Another colleague says he is in love with Saunders but dislikes Strauss; I really do not understand his point and find it a bit weird. Finally, the sexiest and most alluring character from my point of view is that of Maya Herrera played by Dania Ramirez. I once came across a view on the internet which said that Maya’s black tears were very sexy and endear you more to her.

So something has really been bothering me lately. Two of my favorite shows have completed their runs and now I am left to think about which one will have a lasting legacy. Will it be Lost or Heroes? Will it be a show about a group of strangers stranded on an island in the Pacific or about a group of strangers that have superpowers?

Here are the reasons why both shows could be remembered for years to come:

Lost: The idea of being trapped on an island is an old concept. Not only does Lost have that but the island is full of secrets that the show slowly reveals. You have Korean couple who are not exactly what they seem and Kate who is a murder trying to comfort her guard while he is dying. The show from the very first scenes of the plane crash has been drawing people into the secrets of the island and the survivors of Oceanic 815. I have to admit I was pretty hooked and could not stop watching Lost. It was an amazing show.

Heroes: Obviously I love Heroes; it was awesome from the beginning. You had this Japanese man Hiro discovering his powers; his future self told him that he had to save the cheerleader in order to save the world. The we have the man in the Horn Rimmed Glasses (HRG) who is hunting down heroes but whose daughter has superpowers as well. You see HRG’s daughter Claire trying to figure out why she can heal from any type of injury. You also see the politician running from his superpowers and his brother who discovered that he can fly. You then see the ultimate villain in Sylar who can take superpowers from other’s after slice opening their skulls. This is a show that has had me all excited from the get go.

Now let’s look at how they compete against one another:

Lost was a hit from the beginning but Heroes slowly became popular during its first season. Lost showed the character’s past and their faults. Heroes showed how the heroes discovered their powers and how they dealt with them. Lost made us ask questions like what is with the numbers and who are the others? Heroes showed us how important it was for these heroes to use their powers to save the rest of the world.

So which show will be remembered the most? Heroes will be remembered for giving us superheroes in this modern real life situations. Lost will be remembered for its excellent writing and keeping the viewers on their toes. In the end it really is up to each person’s point of view. It is not like hr payroll software which one can objectively choose. My favorite show is Heroes and though I loved to watch Lost. There is no other show that is more entertaining than Heroes.
